Wines
A century ago, the wine of Vienne was highly reputed in the restaurants of Rome !
As it carved out the Rhône corridor, the river fashioned the features of the local vineyards. The hills here are steep and tortuous. The wines, perched on sheer slopes, provide a triking spectacle. You can reach the surprising Colline de l’Hermitage on foot, the vertigo-inducing slopes of Condrieu and Cote Rotie, and the spectacular natural “arenas” of Château Grillet, are best admired from valley level. But each view gives an idea of the vignerons huge courage and hard graft in extracting great wines from the granite.
The Rhône valley vineyard present many soils, grounds and climates which provide rich and various wines, in a majority red. All the Rhône Valley wines are the result of a qualified production since 1937 and called Appellation d’origine controlee (A.O.C.)
The five Rhône Valley appellations :
- Costières de Nîmes
- Côtes du Ventoux
- Côtes du Luberon
- Côteaux du Tricastin
- Les Vins des Côtes du Rhône
